A historical gelatin silver print titled “Preistrager, 1989” by August Sander. Inscribed on verso: See photos for reference. A glimpse into the early 20th century where Sander was known for his portraits of Germans from various social and economic backgrounds. “The individual does not make the history of his time, but he both impresses himself on it and expresses its meaning,” Sander explained. “It is possible to record the historical physiognomic image of a whole generation and—with enough knowledge of physiognomy—to make that image speak in photographs.” From a private collection. August Sander (1876-1964) was a German portrait and documentary photographer. Sander's first book Face of our Time was published in 1929. Sander has been described as ""the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century"". Sander's work includes landscape, nature, architecture, and street photography, but he is best known for his portraits, as exemplified by his series People of the 20th Century. In recent years, the August Sander Archive and scholar Susanne Lange published a seven-volume collection comprising 619 of Sander's photographs, August Sander: People of the 20th Century. We have freight shipments delivered to the East Coast every 1-2 weeks, and to the West Coast every 3- 5 weeks. All delivery dates provided by us are estimates, and all freight deliveries are fulfilled by third party companies. While damage in transit is rare, if you receive a damaged item, please retain all packing materials and notify us as soon as possible. We would be happy to facilitate an insurance claim to reimburse you for the cost of repair; or to accept a return for a full refund.
