Description

An expressive abstract cast pewter sculpture by Willem de Kooning. Untitled, published in 1972. Signed “W de K” with an annotation of 38/100. Published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles. Maker’s mark next to artist’s signature. De Kooning became interested in sculpture in 1969 when he met sculptor Herzl Emanuel in Rome and he started to make 3-dimensional work in Emanuel’s foundry. Henry Moore encouraged him to keep expanding his technique and enlarge the small sculptures. Gemini G.E.L. helped Willem de Kooning execute the project, making a successful collaboration. De Koonings sculptures are completed abstracted like the artist’s paintings which make them unique and surprising when compared to traditional sculptures. His sculptures are very sought after and have sold at auction in the 6 figures. A unique opportunity for modern art collectors. From a private collection, originally purchased from Sotheby’s auction house in 1991. Dimensions: 9.5”h x 10.5”w x 5”d (total with base) / 6.5”h x 10.5” x 2.5” (sculpture). Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist. Known as a postwar artist, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as abstract expressionism or “action painting.” He and was part of a group of artists that came to be known as the New York School. Other painters in this group included Jackson Pollock and Robert Motherwell. The artist was featured in a number of solo exhibitions from 1948 to 1966, many in New York but also nationally and internationally. De Kooning's retrospective held at MoMA in 2011–2012 made him one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Today de Kooning's paintings have been sold in the 21st century for record prices. In September 2015, Geffen sold de Kooning's oil painting Interchange to hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin for $300 million, the highest price paid for a painting at the time. De Kooning’s art can be found in museums and institutions worldwide.
