The Bible Series is one of the most sought-after editions from Marc Chagall. Commissioned by art dealer and publisher, Ambroise Vollard to illustrate the Bible, it was an expansive suite of 105 etchings and was completed in 1956. Chagall drew inspiration from travels to biblical historical sites and his experience with the land and the people. The result is a timeless and historical artistic series depicting one of the most important pieces of literature. Chagall’s Bible Series was the first major illustrated edition of the Old Testament in the 20th century. A rare and sought-after artwork for collectors of modern art. From a private collection. Dimensions: 28”h x 19.75”w x 1.5”d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was an early modernist famed for iconic romantic and surreal imagery. He created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries, and fine art prints. In the early 1920s he met Ambroise Vollard, which led to his first solo exhibition in Paris. During his lifetime he had a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1946. He also was commissioned a variety of public installations including the stain glass windows at the synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center, Jerusalem (installed in 1962); a ceiling for the Paris Opera (installed in 1964); a window for the United Nations building, New York (installed in 1964); murals for the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (installed in 1967); and windows for the cathedral in Metz, France (installed in 1968). An exhibition of the artist's work from 1967 to 1977 was held at the Musee du Louvre, Paris, in 1977-78, and a major retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1985. Today, Chagall is known as one of the greatest artists of the Modern period and his art is in countless museums across the United States.
