Description

A mind-bending colored pencil drawing with gesso/photo on paper titled “Altered States: The Consequence of Imperialism” by American artist Don Eddy. Hand signed and dated 1988 in red ink on the bottom right. Gallery tag on verso from Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York. The artwork features a photograph of a serene ocean scene in which the artist drew a series of photorealistic images that are collaged on top of the photo. The hyperrealism of the objects tricks the eye, and in an interview, the artist explained this “forces the viewer to see the act of translation from the object to the photo to the painting.” A unique modern statement. From a private collection. Dimensions: 20”h x 17”w x 1”d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Don Eddy (1944- ) is a contemporary representational painter. He gained recognition in American art around 1970 amid a group of artists that critics and dealers identified as Photorealists or Hyperrealists, based on their work's high degree of verisimilitude and use of photography as a resource material. Eddy's work belongs to many museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Whitney Museum in New York, the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Israel Museum, Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (MAMC, France), Saint Louis Art Museum, San Antonio Museum of Art, and Utrecht Museum (The Netherlands).
